Reader Question:

Labyrinthotomy and Injections

Question: The labyrinthotomy with injection was reported using 69801, a procedure that has a 90-day postoperative global period. The patient returns 60 days later for another injection. Can we bill for the second injection?

Florida Subscriber
Answer: Code 69801 (labyrinthotomy, with or without cryosurgery including other nonexcisional destructive procedures or perfusion of vestibuloactive drugs [single or multiple perfusions]; transcanal) clearly states single or multiple perfusions. Furthermore, a note just below the descriptor in the CPT manual states that 69801 includes all required infusions performed on initial and subsequent days of treatment. Therefore, any subsequent infusions should not be reported separately, as they are included in 69801.
