Reader Question:

Double Check Administration Route for Depo-Medrol Injection

Question: Our otolaryngologist sometimes gives Depo-Medrol injections to his patients. Should we be billing CPT® 96372 in addition to the HCPCS code J1040?

Minnesota Subscriber

Answer: A provider can administer Depo-Medrol via several routes, such as intramuscular, intraarticular, or intralesional. Therefore, verify the administration route before coding the procedure. If your physician administers it intramuscularly, then 96372 (Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection [specify substance or drug]; subcutaneous or intramuscular) with J1040 (Injection, methylprednisolone acetate, 80 mg) is correct. Make sure that you are billing the correct amount of units for the J1050. The doctor may be giving more than one cc, and if that is the case, you will need to include that in the units field of your claim.
