Reader Question:

Consider 35800 for Tracheostomy Wound Exploration

Question: I’m looking for the correct code for tracheostomy wound exploration with control of bleeding. Is there a CPT® code for this, or do we need to report “unlisted procedure”?

Answer: One possibility is 35800 (Exploration for postoperative hemorrhage, thrombosis or infection; neck) with diagnosis 998.11 (Hemorrhage complicating a procedure). If your surgeon doesn’t think this is accurate, file with 42999 (Unlisted procedure, pharynx, adenoids or tonsils). Include documentation of the procedure and a suggestion for reimbursement based on 20100 (Exploration of penetrating wound (separate procedure); neck).
