On March 16, the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for Ethical Coding released its new Standards of Ethical Coding. The 10-point guidelines emphasize accurate, complete, and consistent coding practices.
I think the [standards] are right on target, says Catherine Brink, CMM, CPC, president of Healthcare Resource Management in Spring Lake, N.J. Coders need a code of conduct to maintain the highest standards and to be in compliance.
The Standards are available at the AHIMA Web site, www.ahima.org/infocenter/guidelines/standards.html.
