Zero In on Surgery’s Purpose for Code Choice

Question: When the surgeon performs a surgical arthroscopy of the subtalar joint, how should I report the procedure?

Oregon Subscriber

Answer: It depends on the reason the physician performed the surgery. Go back and check the encounter notes. Then, choose from the following codes, depending on encounter specifics:

  • 29904 (Arthroscopy, subtalar joint, surgical; with removal of loose body or foreign body)
  • 29905 (… with synovectomy)
  • 29906 (… with debridement)
  • 29907 (… with subtalar arthrodesis)

Also, be sure to check the laterality of the surgery and append modifier RT (Right side) or LT (Left side), depending on encounter specifics.
