Let Unlisted Lead the Way for Subtalar Implant

Question: What are the correct codes to report a subtalar arthroereisis with MBA implant due to posterior tibial tendon dysfunction? The surgeon performed the procedure on an 11-year-old male patient.

Answer: CPT does not yet include a procedure code that describes the placement of a subtalar implant, so you must report unlisted-procedure code 28899 (Unlisted procedure, foot or toes). Be sure to include documentation that clearly explains why you must report an unlisted- procedure code rather than a more specific CPT code.
