Follow CPT Assistant Advice for Proximal Hamstring Repair

Question: The surgeon performed a proximal hamstring repair and stated that, “a 5.5 metal corkscrew anchor was placed in the ischium, and the sutures doubly loaded, 5.5 corkscrew sutures were placed in a whipstitch fashion using a running locking stitch up and down the hamstring tendon.” What is the best code for this procedure?

California Subscriber

Answer: According to the January 2015 issue of the CPT Assistant, you should report this procedure with the unlisted code 27299 (Unlisted procedure, pelvis or hip joint)—which some find confusing because the hamstring runs from the hip to the knee, but this is the AMA recommendation.
