Reader Questions:

Femoral Head Is Not Coded As Femur

Question: Is there a CPT code for resurfacing the femoral head? Someone recommended 27599 (Unlisted procedure, femur or knee) but we aren't sure if it's correct. Florida Subscriber Answer: CPT does not have a specific code for resurfacing the femoral head, but do not bill for it using 27599 because this refers to procedures of the femur, and the femoral head is part of the hip joint. Therefore, 27299 (Unlisted procedure, pelvis or hip joint) is the most accurate code for you to report a femoral head resurfacing.
