Reader Question:

Removal of Stimulator

Question: How should I code for the removal of an implanted bone stimulator?

Delaware Subscriber

Answer: Similar to the codes for application of casts and external-fixation devices, the nature of 20975 (electrical stimulation to aid bone healing; invasive [operative]) is such that it includes the removal of the stimulator as well. Once the insertion has been coded, the removal is part of the global surgical package. CPT indicates that cast removal should be reported only if another physician applied it and that external-fixation device removal is reported only when the procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
