October 2016 Brought New Postprocedure Haemorrhage, Hematoma Dx

Question: What are the changes for ICD-10 postprocedure haemorrhage codes for the spinal cord?

Answer: The ICD-10 changes for post procedure haemorrhage and hematoma allows you to separately report these two conditions.

As of October 1, you should see two new codes for postprocedure hematoma:

  • G97.61, Postprocedural hematoma of a nervous system organ or structure following a nervous system procedure
  • G97.62, Postprocedural hematoma of a nervous system organ or structure following other procedure.

The descriptors of codes G97.51 (Postprocedural hemorrhage and hematoma of a nervous system organ or structure following a nervous system procedure) and G97.52 (Postprocedural hemorrhage and hematoma of a nervous system organ or structure following other procedure) will be revised to ‘postprocedural hemorrhage of a nervous system organ or structure following a nervous system procedure’ ‘postprocedural hemorrhage of a nervous system organ or structure following other procedure,’ respectively. This makes G97.51 and G97.52 specific for postprocedure haemorrhage.
