Reader Question:

Obtaining Coding Certification

Question: I would like to know about state testing for coding certification. Are there are any workbooks or books to study?

Elizabeth Allen, Coding Specialist
New Jersey

Answer: Susan Callaway-Stradley, CPC, CCS-P, an independent coder and educator in North Augusta, S.C., says there are national certification programs through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the American Health Management Association (AHIMA). AAPC has an independent study program and have study guides available. They schedule exams throughout the year. AAPC can be reached at 800-626-2633. AHIMA has a study guide and the exam is given twice a year. Contact AHIMA for dates and locations. The phone number is 312-233-1100.
