Use 27385 to Report Hamstring Tendon Repairs
Question: We reported unlisted code 27599 for a proximal hamstring tendon repair, but the claim was denied. How should we correct the claim? Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: In the past, 27599 (Unlisted procedure, femur or knee) would be the correct code to assign for a hamstring tendon repair. However, the AMA recently amended its coding recommendations for this procedure. The May 2025 issue of CPT® Assistant instructs coders to use 27385 (Suture of quadriceps or hamstring muscle rupture; primary) to report an open proximal hamstring tendon repair. The article states, “the relevant specialty society advises that it would not be appropriate to report unlisted code 27599 …” and that “it would be appropriate to report code 27385.” Mike Shaughnessy, BA, CPC, Development Editor, AAPC
