Intraoperative/postprocedural complications get new codes, too. The final list for ICD-10 2023 is official — and it’s a doozy. Specifics: ICD-10 2023 will feature: That’s a lot to unpack, and there isn’t much time to do it. Remember, the effective date for ICD-10 2023 is Oct. 1, 2022, which is when you’ll be expected to use these new codes when appropriate. In this (and upcoming) issues, we’ll take a look at the new ICD-10 codes you’re going to want to know before ICD-10 takes effect. This Muscular Dystrophy Type Gets Code Set The first set of new codes we’ll address will be in the G71.0- (Muscular dystrophy) code family. ICD-10 2023 adds the following: Condition definition: According to MedlinePlus, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy is “a group of diseases that cause weakness and wasting of the muscles in the arms and legs. The muscles most affected are those closest to the body (proximal muscles), specifically the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, pelvic area, and thighs.” Impact: Previously, you would have coded limb-girdle muscular dystrophy with G71.09 (Other specified muscular dystrophies). The addition of specific codes for this condition will make diagnosis coding more accurate and paint a more complete picture of what is ailing the patient. 1 more G code: ICD-10 2023 will also add G90.A (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome [POTS]) to its collection of codes. According to Cleveland Clinic, POTS “is a condition that affects blood flow. POTS causes the development of symptoms — usually lightheadedness, fainting and an uncomfortable, rapid increase in heartbeat — that come on when standing up from a reclining position and relieved by sitting or lying back down.” The G90.A code will be added to the G90.- (Disorders of autonomic nervous system) code set. ICD-10 Beefs Up Muscle Wasting Dx Muscular dystrophy isn’t the only code set that’s getting more specific in 2023. ICD-10 2023 will add the following codes to the M62.5- (Muscle wasting and atrophy, not elsewhere classified) code set: Impact: Previously, there was no code set for muscle wasting and atrophy specific to the back. You would have had to code the condition with M62.58 (Muscle wasting and atrophy, not elsewhere classified, other site). The addition of anatomically specific codes for this condition will make diagnosis coding more accurate and paint a more complete picture of what is ailing the patient. Operative Complications Get More Specific Next year’s code set will also have new codes for injuries that occur intraoperatively or post-procedurally. ICD-10 2023 will add the following codes to the M96.- (Intraoperative and postprocedural complications and disorders of musculoskeletal system, not elsewhere classified) code set:
