Unfurrow Your Brow With 701.8

Question: Which diagnosis code should I report for brow ptosis?

Ohio Subscriber

Answer: Use 701.8 (Other specified hypertrophic and atrophic conditions of skin).

If the optometrist performs a procedure to correct this condition, you will need to document, perhaps with photos, that the optometrist performed this procedure for a medically necessary reason, not for cosmetic reasons.

Ask your local Medicare carrier if they have a local medical review policy for services performed for brow ptosis that lists additional guidelines for documenting the medical necessity and billing.
