READER QUESTIONS:

Fall Back on Unlisted-Procedure Code for Intacs

Question: I need a more specific CPT code for billing intacs. I have used 66999 in the past, but is there a more specific code to use?

Florida Subscriber Answer: There is no specific CPT code for inserting intrastromal corneal ring segments, also known as intacs. Most carriers recommend that you report 66999 (Unlisted procedure, anterior segment of eye) for billing intacs. Be aware, however, that most carriers also view the procedure as investigational, and therefore may not reimburse you for it.

Key: Anytime you file a claim using an unlisted-procedure code, you must submit a full operative report to describe the procedure or service. Also include a separate report that explains in simple, straightforward language exactly what the ophthalmologist did.
