Question: Can we bill a consultation based on a referral from an optometrist? California Subscriber Answer: Yes. CPT states that you may bill a consultation based on a request from an "appropriate source." Medicare recognizes optometrists as providers. Use the consultation codes (99241-99245 for outpatient, 99251-99255 for inpatient).
