Reader Question:

Evaluate Therapeutic Contact Lens Replacement

Question: We have a patient with severe dry eye who needed replacement therapeutic contact lenses to treat the condition. Can you tell me if Medicare pays separately for the lens fitting and the replacement lens? And is there a code to use for the bandage contact lens?

Answer: You’ll bill Medicare using code 92071 (Fitting of contact lens for treatment of ocular surface disease) for the bandage contact lens fitting and supply, whether it is initial or replacement. Note that this code has a therapeutic indication in the descriptor, which makes it an appropriate choice for the severe dry eye. Bear in mind that all payers may not cover this service for dry eye.

There’s no separate code for the bandage contact lens which would be included as “supplies” in the primary procedure code 92071.
