Question: I heard from a colleague that optometrists (ODs) in California might soon be able to perform laser eye surgery and other minor procedures that involve the use of a scalpel or injections. Is this true? California Subscriber Answer: In September 2022, the state’s assembly did approve bill AB 2236, which would have expanded the profession’s scope of practice in California to include optometric surgery. But California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed the radical measure, stating that he is not convinced that the education and training required (less than one year) are sufficient to prepare optometrists to perform the advanced surgical procedures identified.
