Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Don't Cry Over Cryotherapy Codes

Question: My ophthalmologist is doing removal of a malignant conjunctival growth in the hospital with cryotherapy. I'm not sure which procedure code to use.

New Jersey Subscriber Answer: Report 68135 (Destruction of lesion, conjunctiva). However, if the ophthalmologist also has to perform a conjunctivoplasty, report code 68320 (Conjunctivoplasty; with conjunctival graft or extensive rearrangement). NCCI bundles 68135 into 68320, so don't report them separately. - Advice for You Be the Coder and Reader Questions provided by Maggie M.
