Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Correct Coding for Optic Nerve Evaluation

Question: In what instances can we use the new code 92135?

EyeCare Professionals
Reno, NV

Answer: Most ICD-9 codes appropriate to glaucoma would justify the medical necessity for the 92135 service (scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging [e.g., scanning laser] with interpretation and report, unilateral), a new code for 1999. Generally, its a service performed for patients with glaucoma because it maps the optic nerve head. It is sometimes referred to as an optic nerve evaluation. However, you cant use 92135 if you dont have the machine; and few small practices do, because this is a very expensive machine. Its possible now that there is a code for the imaging, more ophthalmologists will be interested in purchasing the equipment.
