Reader Question:

Angle Kappa Measurement Is Incidental

Question: We perform a measurement called angle kappa to help in calculating and choosing a multifocal IOL with cataract surgery. Would  this be a billable test as compared to the other pre-op cataract measures (e.g., A-scan and keratometry)?

Answer:
The angle kappa measurement is incidental to the eye exam, and would not be separately billable. It is considered incidental to the work performed in 92002-92014 (Ophthalmological services: medical examination and evaluation…) or the appropriate E/M code (992xx, Office or other outpatient visit…)
