Use sixth character to specify which eye is affected.
In a previous issue, we looked at the changes coming in diagnosis coding for senile cataracts (see “Get to Know the New Senile Cataract Codes,” Ophthalmology Coding Alert, Vol. 17 No. 7). Similar changes are coming for the nonsenile cataract codes; as we’ve seen with most of the eye and adnexa ICD-10 codes, most of the new codes will specify not only the condition, but whether the left, right, both or an unspecified eye is affected.
