When ICD-10 comes into effect later this year, the ICD-9 codes in this article will no longer be valid. Instead, to report diabetes with ophthalmic manifestations, look to the following codes starting October 1.
Don’t miss: Note that the codes listed above describe both the diabetes and the ophthalmic manifestation, so that a single ICD-10 code would take the place of two ICD-9 codes. For example, for a patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy, you would report 250.52 and 362.02 (Proliferative diabetic retinopathy) under ICD-9. However, once ICD-10 takes effect, you would only report E11.359 (Type II diabetes mellitus with proliferative diabetic retinopathy without macular edema).
