Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

DID YOU KNOW? ~ Avoid Using 67350 Starting Jan. 1

CMS replaces 67350 with a new biopsy code

Beginning Jan. 1, if you report 67350 (Biopsy of extraocular muscle), you'll be faced with denials. The American Medical Association is replacing 67350 with a new code, 67346, but it is not changing the code descriptor. Code 67346 now represents a biopsy of the extraocular muscle.

"Although this is a 'new code,' it really is not. It is actually just a code number change with the same descriptor," says Maggie M. Mac, CMM, CPC, CMSCS, consulting manager for Pershing, Yoakley & Associates, Clearwater, Fla. "Why the AMA did this, I have no idea. I am sure they will explain it at the Chicago meeting in a couple weeks."

Note: There are no other ophthalmology-specific coding changes that you need to worry about in 2007.
