Question: Are there any recent changes in the diagnosis codes for urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostate hyperplasia? Can we submit code N40.1 for this diagnosis? Is there any new ICD-10-CM code?

Answer: You can report N40.1 for urinary tract obstruction due to hyperplastic changes in the prostate. ICD-10-CM does not offer any new code for this condition. According to the recent reform, there is a revision in the descriptor of code N40.1. The descriptor ‘Enlarged prostate with lower urinary tract symptoms’ will change to ‘Benign prostatic hyperplasia with lower urinary tract symptoms.’
Similarly, the descriptor of code N40.0 (Enlarged prostate without lower urinary tract symptoms) will change to “Benign prostatic hyperplasia without lower urinary tract symptoms.”
Why the change? The term “benign prostatic hyperplasia” indicates a more specific enlargement of the prostate gland. This allows you to distinguish the hyperplastic enlargement of the prostate from other causes of prostatic enlargement such a cancer of the prostate gland (C61,) acute and chronic inflammation and infection of the prostate gland (N41.0 or N41.1) or a prostatic abscess (N41.2).
