Earn for Sequential Push Administration

Question: In a patient with lymphocytic leukemia, our physician administered meperidine IV push along with chemotherapy. The administration of chemotherapy was stopped as the patient complained of pain and chills. After meperidine was administered, the chemotherapy was resumed. How can we report the meperidine administration in this case? Is meperidine administration considered incidental?

Answer: From the description, it appears that your physician is administering meperidine as a sequential push. You submit code +96375 (Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection [specify substance or drug]; each additional sequential intravenous push of a new substance/drug [List separately in addition to code for primary procedure]). This is an add-on CPT® code. You would also submit the appropriate codes for the completed chemotherapy administration. In this example, the meperidine administration was not incidental.
