You Can Report 61020 with 96542

Question: How do we report when the physician performs an aspiration of CSF followed by administration of chemotherapy on a patient through an Ommaya reservoir? Is it correct to report only 61020 or we do also report code 96542?

Answer: For the service described, you submit code 61020 (Ventricular puncture through previous burr hole, fontanelle, suture, or implanted ventricular catheter/ reservoir; without injection) for the ventricular puncture. You also submit code 96542 (Chemotherapy injection, subarachnoid or intraventricular via subcutaneous reservoir, single or multiple agents) as you specify that your physician administered chemotherapy. Do not forget to submit the appropriate J codes for the drugs that your physician administers.
