Put ICD-10 Expectations on Ice

Question: Some of the coders in our oncology office have been talking about ICD-10. Are we going to switch to this system soon?

Answer: Don't throw out your ICD-9 manual yet. ICD-10 has been in the works for several years now, and the latest word is that ICD-10 won't debut until at least fall of 2007.

Experts say the ICD-10 draft is nearly complete and contains ICD-10-CM, diagnostic coding, and ICD-10-PCS, procedural coding for inpatients.

The first character of each ICD-10 code will be alphabetical, such as J81, (Pulmonary edema). And ICD-10 will include six-digit codes, some of which will be eligible for a seventh-digit diagnosis -modifier.-
