Oncology & Hematology Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

92511 and 31575 Depend on Destination

Question: If the oncologist inserts a scope through the nose to examine the larynx, is this a nasopharyngoscopy (92511)?Answer: For a larynx exam, you should report 31575 (Laryngoscopy, flexible fiberoptic; diagnostic) even if the physician inserts the scope via the nose. The physician may choose to insert the scope into the nose for patient comfort.Key: Choose the code based on the anatomic area examined. If instead the physician had examined the nasopharynx, then you would report 92511 (Nasopharyngoscopy with endoscope [separate procedure]). The area examined for 92511 may include the posterior edge of the soft palate to the nasopharyngeal wall, including the Eustachian tube openings.
