Reader Question:

Size and location of Foot Tumor are Key

Question: Our physician did a resection for a tumorous growth on the foot. How can we report this service?

North Carolina Subscriber

Answer: The information shared for the tumor is incomplete and cannot help to suggest an accurate code. You need to check in the documentation where the tumor was located, if it was a subcutaneous, intramuscular, or deeper extended tumor. Also confirm the size of the tumor.

Once you have collected the needed information, you can choose form the following codes:

  • 28039 — Excision, tumor, soft tissue of foot or toe, subcutaneous; 1.5 cm or greater
  • 28041 — … subfascial (e.g., intramuscular); 1.5 cm or greater
  • 28043 — … subcutaneous; less than 1.5 cm
  • 28045 — … subfascial (e.g., intramuscular); less than 1.5 cm
  • 28046 — Radical resection of tumor (e.g., sarcoma), soft tissue of foot or toe; less than 3 cm
  • 28047 — … 3 cm or greater.
