Question: Our oncologist mentioned mesna administration on the clinical note for the chemotherapy details. What is mesna? Can we report mesna with chemotherapy?

Answer: Mesna is an adjuvant commonly used with cancer chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide and ifosphamide as these compounds can cause damage to the bladder and hemorrhagic cystitis. Mesna helps to protect the bladder and kidneys by binding to the compounds making them less toxic. You will report mesna with HCPCS code J9209 (Injection, Mesna, 200 mg).
