Answer: The ICD-10-CM changes are soon approaching. There are likely reforms in codes for ovarian cysts. The following four codes will be deleted from Oct 1, 2016.

  • N83.0, Follicular cyst of ovary
  • N83.1, Corpus luteum cyst
  • N83.20, Unspecified ovarian cysts and
  • N83.29, Other ovarian cysts.

Laterality will guide the choice of new codes: You will select a code for submission depending upon the right or left ovary being affected by the cyst. For follicular cyst in the right and left ovary, you will have codes N83.01 (Follicular cyst of right ovary) and N83.02 (Follicular cyst of left ovary), respectively. Similarly, you will have codes N83.11 (Corpus luteum cyst of right ovary) and N83.12 (Corpus luteum cyst of left ovary) for corpus luteum cysts in the right and left ovary, respectively.

When your physician does not specify the side for the follicular or corpus luteum cysts, you will submit codes N83.00 (Follicular cyst of ovary, unspecified side) and N83.10 (Corpus luteum cyst of ovary, unspecified side), respectively.

There will also be codes for an unspecified ovarian cyst. These include the following:

  • N83.201, Unspecified ovarian cyst, right side,
  • N83.202, Unspecified ovarian cyst, left side, and
  • N83.209, Unspecified ovarian cyst, unspecified side.

For other ovarian cyst, you can look at the following:

  • N83.291, Other ovarian cyst, right side,
  • N83.292, Other ovarian cyst, left side, and
  • N83.299, Other ovarian cyst, unspecified side.
