Question: Our physician performed a phlebotomy in a patient with hemochromatosis. How can we report this procedure? Is it good to submit code 36415?

Answer: You submit code 99195 (Phlebotomy, therapeutic [separate procedure]) for the phlebotomy procedure your physician performs for the patient with hemochromatosis. The phlebotomy is considered a therapeutic procedure in hemachromatosis. It helps to reduce the iron reserves and improves the condition of the patient. Your provider may insert an intravenous needle in a vein and withdraw approximately a pint of blood. 36415 (Collection of venous blood by venipuncture) is not the right code in this situation.
