Make Medical Necessity a Mandate in Platelet Transfusions

Make sure the physician documents why the platelet transfusion was done. Platelet replacement is done when platelet counts are low to protect against bleeding.

When to use platelet transfusions? Platelet transfusions are used in patients undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia, multiple myeloma, those with aplastic anemia. It is also given in patients who are undergoing radiation therapy. Additionally, patients with AIDS, sepsis, bone marrow transplant, or organ transplant also receive platelet transfusions. It is also used in patients with hypersplenism or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) or in patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.
