HCFA Announces New ICD-9 Codes

In an attempt to keep up with new technologies and the ever-changing face of medicine, the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) announced in May that it would be adding several new ICD-9 codes. At the same time, the agency will be deleting 20 codes and revising the definitions of seven more. One code affects oncology specifically.
These changes will take effect Oct. 1, 2000, HCFA announced in the May 5 Federal Register. The changes were proposed and accepted during meetings of the agencys National Center for Health Statistics in 1999. The code changes that will affect oncology include:
Revised Diagnosis Code Titles
V76.49: Special screening for malignant, other sites.
