Gel Spacers For Prostate Cancer Management

The use of gel spacers is a recent advance in the management of prostate cancer. Your physician will inject the gel between the prostate and rectum to position the patient's anterior rectal wall as far from the prostate as possible. This procedure helps to create a space between the prostate and rectum and reduces the dose of radiation that may be delivered to the rectum when targeting the tumor in the prostate. The injected gel solidifies and then liquefies overtime to be excreted in the urine.

You can read more about the use of spacers in prostate cancer management in "Current role of spacers for prostate cancer radiotherapy" published in the World Journal of Clinical Oncology, PMCID: PMC4675900.
