CPT defines routine antepartum care as out-of-hospital service that includes initial and subsequent history, physical exams, recording of weight, blood pressure, fetal heart tones, routine chemical (dipstick) urinalysis, monthly visits up to 28 weeks gestation, biweekly visits between 38 and 36 weeks, and weekly visits until delivery.
Four global, routine maternity codes include these antepartum services. These codes also include the admission to the hospital for delivery, labor management, delivery of fetus and placenta, episiotomy, forceps/vacuum delivery, postpartum care in hospital and outpatient:
59400 - Routine obstetric care including antepartum care, vaginal delivery (with or without episiotomy, and/or forceps) and postpartum care
59510 - Routine obstetric care including antepartum care, cesarean delivery, and postpartum care
59610 - Routine obstetric care including antepartum care, vaginal delivery (with or without episiotomy, and/or forceps) and postpartum care, after previous cesarean delivery
59618 - Routine obstetric care including antepartum care, cesarean delivery, and postpartum care, following attempted vaginal delivery after previous cesarean delivery.
