Anonymous KY Subscriber

Answer: The ICD-9 manual has many codes that can be used to report visits for contraception management (code category V25). Some of the codes are used for initiation of birth control while others describe surveillance for previously prescribed birth control methods. Although injections for Depo-provera are not specifically noted under this code category, coding experts say you dont use the unspecified code. V25.40 (contraceptive surveillance, unspecified). The Coding Clinic Third Quarter, 1997 says to assign code V25.02 (encounter for contraceptive management, initiation of other contraceptive measures) for the initial Depo-provera injection and code V25.49 (contraceptive management, other method) for subsequent follow-up visits.
