Ultrasound Code

Question: What is the right ICD-9 code for performing an ultrasound early in pregnancy because were unsure of the date of the last menstrual period?

William McKenzie, MD
Mililani, HI

Answer: There is not a specific diagnosis code for performing ultrasounds to determine the age of pregnancy, so you will need to use the antenatal screening code V28.8 (Other Specified Antenatal Screening). We are hearing that some carriers are rejecting V28.8, which may mean they are deciding not to cover any screening ultrasounds. Check with your carriers and find out if and why they are rejecting payment.
