No Removal? Then You Won't Need a ICD-9 Code

Question: During laparoscopic cauterization of endometriosis, the obgyn discovers a finding of blood in the cul-de-sac and on the posterior surface of the broad ligament and between the bladder and the uterus. What ICD-9 code should I report?Answer: You have no need to code for it, because you won't be coding to remove it. But if you must include something on the claim, the closest code would be 568.81 (Hemoperitoneum). Just be sure that you do have a supporting diagnosis for the removal of the endometriosis.ICD-10: When your diagnosis system changes in 2013, you'll report K66.1 (Hemoperitoneum) instead.
