Reader Questions:

Must Know Malignant or Benign for Neuroma

Question: Which CPT and ICD-9 codes should I use for the excision of vaginal neuroma?

Answer: A neuroma is a neoplasm made up of cells from the nervous system. You should report 57135 (Excision of vaginal cyst or tumor) for the removal, but you should wait for the path report before billing this. You have to know whether this is a benign tumor (221.1, Benign neoplasm of other female genital organs; vagina) or a malignant one (184.0, Malignant neoplasm of other and unspecified female genital organs; vagina) before you can pick the appropriate ICD-9 code.
