Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy

Question: I am at a loss for the correct way to bill for a laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy. This is different from a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy (56308).

Answer: A laparoscopic supracervical hysterectomy can be coded using 56308 (laparoscopy, surgical; with vaginal hysterectomy with or without removal of tube[s], with or without removal of ovary[s] [laproscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy]) because it is the code that most closely describes the procedure. Some payers may request that code 56399 (unlisted procedure, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy) be used.
In CPT 2000, the codes change to 58550 (the renumbered code for 56308) or 58578 (unlisted laparoscopy procedure, uterus).
