Question: During a vaginal delivery, our ob-gyn noted an area of the left leg and thigh to be erythematous. The patient states she had mosquito bites in those areas. One at the inner thigh is suspicious for MRSA. The ob-gyn sent cultures and placed dressing on the area. Can I bill anything in addition to delivery code? South Carolina Subscriber
Answer: You won’t find any code for obtaining a swab for a culture, so you should not bill an E/M service for this but rather wait for the results. If further care is required, bill any follow-up E/M services with a modifier 24 (Unrelated evaluation and management service by the same physician or other qualified health care professional during a postoperative period).
