Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Ensure Success With the Essure Procedure

Question: My ob-gyn is doing the Essure procedure now in the office, and the ob-gyn administers Toradol to the patient afterward. What diagnosis should I report with the Toradol? Is 338.18 a viable option?Florida SubscriberAnswer: Because the ob-gyn normally gives a patient Toradol to prevent pain after the procedure, you should treat this as a prophylactic measure. Therefore, you should report V07.39 (Other prophylactic chemotherapy). Toradol is a drug the obgyn prescribed to the patient to prevent pain, so it qualifies as a prophylactic measure.Unless she is having postop pain when the drug is given and your ob-gyn documents this complaint in the medical note, you should not report 338.18 (Other acute postoperative pain).ICD-10: So far, you won't find a code in ICD-10 for V07.39 that applies. Code 338.18, however, will become G89.18 (Other acute postprocedural pain).
