Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Don't Be Surprised By 49322 Denial

Question: My ob-gyn performed a hysteroscopy, dilation and curettage (D&C), NovaSure ablation, diagnostic laparoscopy, laparoscopic drainage of cyst of Morgagni, and a cauterization of endometriosis of right ovary. What is NovaSure ablation, and what CPT codes should I submit?Texas SubscriberAnswer: NovaSure is an ablation of the endometrial lining of the uterus. The surgical code is 58563 (Hysteroscopy, surgical; with endometrial ablation [e.g., endometrial resection, electrosurgical ablation, thermoablation]). This code will include your D&C.Also, you should report 58662 (Laparoscopy, surgical; with fulguration or excision of lesions of the ovary, pelvic viscera, or peritoneal surface by any method).Heads up: Some payers might also consider reimbursing your physician for 49322 (... with aspiration of cavity or cyst [e.g., ovarian cyst] [single or multiple]), but don't be surprised if payers deny 49322 as incidental, since you are already billing 58662.
