Coding for a Bichloracetic Acid Application

Question: How do I code for bichloracetic acid (BCAA) application when performed as part of an office visit?

Bobette Wreath, Office Manager, Elgin, IL

Answer: If it was used to treat bacterial, parasitic or fungoid disease, you can code 57150. If you bill an E/M service for the same encounter, remember to add a modifier 25 to the code selected as 57150 is a CPT starred procedure. If the application was used for some other purpose, like visualization of an area, it is part of the exam and not coded separately.
