Ob-Gyn Coding Alert

Reader Questions:

Clarify How You Report 93976

Question: My ob-gyn's documentation states, "I turned on the Color Doppler button to ensure the blood flow is going to each ovary. I observed each ovary for several minutes with occasional manipulation required." This service is in addition to 76830. How should I report it? Kansas Subscriber Answer: You should include this service in the basic scan: 76830 (Ultrasound, transvaginal). According to a CPT clarification this year, you should report 93976 (Duplex scan of arterial inflow and venous outflow of abdominal, pelvic, scrotal contents and/or retroperitoneal organs; limited study) only if the ob-gyn intended to examine the patient for an abnormality of the vessels -- not for simply noting that blood is flowing into an organ. Watch out: Don't be tempted. You can report +93325 (Doppler echocardiography color flow velocity mapping [list separately in addition to codes for echocardiography]) only with the echocardiography codes.
