Reader Questions:

Abnormal Pap Smear

Question: What would be the proper dx code for identifying the type of cells in an abnormal Pap smear? Would it still be 795.0 (abnormal Pap)?

Dena Walker

Answer: Code 795.0 is the catchall code for abnormal Pap smear cells without a definitive diagnosis of cancer, ca-in-situ, or benign or in cases where an organism is not identified as to HPV, etc. Therefore this code would be used for ASCUS or other abnormal cells.
