2 Options for Burch Procedure With Hysterectomy

Question: Should I code a Burch procedure with a supracervical hyster-ectomy with 58152? Would I need to append modifier 52 because the physician left the cervix?

Nebraska Subscriber Answer: You can bill this procedure using one of two options:

- 58180-- Supracervical abdominal hysterectomy (subtotal hysterectomy), with or without removal of tube(s), with or without removal of ovary(s)

- 51840-51-- Anterior vesicourethropexy, or urethropexy (e.g., Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz, Burch); simple; multiple procedures, or - 58152-52--Total abdominal hysterectomy (corpus and cervix), with or without removal of tube(s), with or without removal of ovary(s); with colpourethrocystopexy (e.g., Marshall-Marchetti-Krantz, Burch); reduced services. Note: You get marginally better reimbursement with the first option, but both options are equally correct.  --The answers for Reader Questions and You Be the Coder were provided by Melanie Witt, RN, CPC-OGS, MA, an ob-gyn coding expert based in Guadalupita, N.M.
