Reader Question:

Was the Dyspareunia Injection a Trigger Point? Find Out

Question: My doctor injected a local percutaneous injection for dyspareunia.

What would be the correct code to use? Also, do we charge for the 10mg of Kenalog with 2% of Lidocaine?

Answer: You would use the therapeutic injection procedure code 96372 (Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection [specify substance or drug]; subcutaneous or intramuscular) as you have not described that this qualified as a trigger point injection into the muscle. If it were trigger point, you would report 20552 (Injection[s]; single or multiple trigger point[s], 1 or 2 muscle[s]). You can charge for the Kenalog with J3301 (Injection, triamcinolone acetonide, not otherwise specified, 10 mg), but not the Lidocaine.
